Tata Motors Limited is a Mumbai-based automobile manufacturer producing a line of cars, sports utility vehicles, trucks, buses and defence vehicles. It stands as India’s only original equipment manufacturer in the automobile sector. The company’s history dates back to its founding in 1945 and is currently part of the larger Tata Group. The company was founded by renowned Indian Industrialist J.R.D. Tata, who also launched other significant businesses for the Tata Group including Titan Industries, Tata Salt, Voltas and Air India. In the April-December 2018 fiscal period, Tata Motors sold 497,972 vehicles, up 25 per cent from the previous year’s total of 398,764. The company brought in just under $44 billion in revenue in 2018. For the first few decades of its existence, Tata Motors produced commercial vehicles exclusively. This all changed in 1988 when they introduced TataMobile, their first passenger vehicle. Other significant models include the Tata Sierra, Tata Nano, Tata Ace, Tata 407, Tata Prima and Tata Harrier. Tata Motors has a truly international presence with auto manufacturing plants in India, Argentina, South Africa, Great Britain and Thailand, which employ more than 81,000 people worldwide.
