The CJ Group is a South Korean conglomerate that started in the food sector and has since grown to include major divisions in various sectors of the economy. It was founded in 1953 as part of the Samsung group by Samsung founder Lee Byung-chul but was spun off into its own entity in 1993. Headquartered in Seoul, CJ has the following branches within the organisation: food and food service, biotechnology and pharmaceutics, home shopping and logistics, and entertainment and media. Combined, the major divisions earned the CJ more than $59 billion in revenue in 2018. The Group’s name comes from the “Cheil Jedang” which can be literally translated into “first sugar manufacture”. This is in reference to the fact that it started as a sugar and flour manufacturer and even has the distinction of launching South Korea’s first flour mill in 1962. The CJ Group entered the feed business in the 1970s however it was in the 1980s when expansion really took hold. They expanded into processed food services as well as pharmaceutical and biotech. In 1993 it officially gained independence from Samsung and three years later changed its name to the CJ Group. It then south further expansion into the media, entertainment, finance and information and communication industries.
