Universal Health Services (UHS) is a Fortune 500, United States-based health care provider. They are considered one of the largest providers of hospital and health care services in the country and internationally, including Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom. They serve a total of over 350 acute care hospitals and behavioural health facilities.
The company began in the small town of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania in 1970, when Allan B. Miller and several other executives, who were former employees of American Medicorp, laid the foundation for UHS. Within the first year and a half of its establishment, the company came to own four hospitals and maintained management contracts with another two.
By the early 1980s, the company established its first IPO and acquired several more hospitals, including its first psychiatric care facility. By the end of the decade, the company’s profits exceeded US $500 million. Six years later, that figure doubled to $1.2 billion, which allowed the company to offer stock options to employees. Since 2003, the company has maintained a spot of the Fortune 500 for 16 consecutive years.
As UHS continues to expand, their growth in all aspects of the business has been uniform, largely thanks to the stability of its leadership.
