21st Century Fox was acquired by The Walt Disney Company on March 20, 2019 for $71.3 billion. Among a number of key assets, the acquisition includes the 20th Century Fox film and TV studios, the Fox Television Group, a 73 per cent stake in National Geographic Partners, Indian broadcaster Star network and a 30 per cent stake in online streaming service Hulu. The move is said to be a key component in Disney taking on competitors Netflix and Amazon in this market. Originally negotiated in November 2017 with Co-Chairman Rupert Murdoch, Comcast had made a competing offer of $65 billion on Disney’s original bid of $52.4 billion, but Disney upped its own the next week. Originally formed via the splitting of Murdoch’s News Corporation assets in 2012, 21st Century Fox had operating revenues of $30.4 billion in 2018, incorporating a net income of $4.46 billion. It employed over 22,000 people in its global news media and entertainment empire and trades on the NASDAQ, with a share price of 41.70USD at the time of writing.
