The Akhmetov family is headed by Rinat Akhmetov from Donetsk, Ukraine. One of Ukraine’s richest people, Rinat is the owner of a business empire with primarily industrial businesses in the metals and mining sectors, as well as real estate, telecommunications, finance and retail.

The son and brother of coal miners, Rinat acquired his wealth in the 1980s and 1990s after the fall of communism in Ukraine. Rinat traded in Ukrainian coal and coke before buying up mining assets in the 1990s, eventually establishing the holding company, System Capital Management (SCM).

The steel and mining firm, Metinvest, one of the largest private companies in Ukraine, was set up to manage SCM’s mining and steel production businesses. Rinat became the owner and president of the Ukrainian Premier League’s football team, FC Shakhtar Donetsk, in 1996. His estimated net worth is $2.6 billion.

Rinat’s son, Damir Akhmetov, joined SCM in 2013 and currently serves as the UK office’s deputy director. He also sits on the supervisory board of DTEK Energy, DTEK Oil & Gas, DTEK Renewables and Metinvest’s advisory board.
