Personal care and adhesive products company that owns several iconic brands, such as Nivea and Coppertone. Headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, the company was founded in 1882 by Paul C. Beiersdorf.
Originally a pharmaceutical business, the company developed its renowned Nivea brand in 1911 and shifted primarily to cosmetic care products in the early 20th century. The company expanded internationally to North America in 1921 with a New York City affiliate, and Nivea was made the world’s largest skincare brand by 1992. The company spun off its Tesa adhesive division in 2001 and joined the prestigious German DAX stock index in 2008.
Today, Beiersdorf has over 20,000 employees and sees annual sales of over $8 billion. Nivea was voted Germany’s most trusted brand in 2016 and generates annual sales of over $5 billion. The Herz family own approximately 47 per cent of Beiersdorf.
