Empresas Copec is one of Chile’s largest natural resource developers with interests primarily in the fuel and forestry sectors. It was founded in 1934 as Compañía de Petróleos de Chile (Copec) as a fuel marketing and distribution company. It has since expanded to its current scope which includes producing and marketing kraft pulp, panels, and sawn timber; distributes liquefied fuels, lubricants, liquefied petroleum gas, and natural gas; and produces fishmeal, fish oil, and canned and frozen products. It is owned by the parent company AntarChile and is headquartered in Las Condes, Chile. In 2017, 55.5 per cent of the company’s revenue was generated from the fuels sector, 40.9 per cent from forestry and 3.6 per cent from other investments. Empresas Copec operates in four regions, NorthCentral America (Canada, United States, Dominican Republic, Panama) South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina) Europe (Germany, Spain, Portugal) and Africa (South Africa). As of year-end, 2017, Empresas Copec had $22.17 billion in assets and employed more than 8,600 people worldwide. The ownership structure breaks down as 60.2 per cent by AntarChile, 29.41 per cent by other corporations, 6.94 per cent by pension funds, and 2.83 per cent by private individuals.
