Global investment firm that is one of the world’s largest asset managers. The California-based firm was founded in New York City by Rupert H. Johnson, Sr., in 1947.
In 1957, Rupert’s son, Charles B. Johnson, took over as the President and CEO of the company, controlling its then-managed assets of $2.5 million. Franklin went public in 1971 and moved the company’s headquarters from New York to San Mateo, California, two years later after acquiring the West coast investment firm, Winfield & Company. The company’s stock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in 1986 and opened its first international office in Taiwan. The investment firm, Templeton, Galbraith & Hansberger Ltd., was acquired in 1992, followed by other key acquisitions throughout the early 2000s. The company began offering exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in 2014 and continued acquiring other firms, such as the global investment managers, Edinburgh Partners, in 2018. Franklin Templeton has offices in 35 countries and serves clients in more than 170 countries, with yearly revenue of $6 billion.
