Supermarket chain operating in over 410 locations throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Giant Eagle was founded in 1931 and is one of the largest privately-owned and family-operated companies in the United States.
The Goldstein, Porter, Chait, Moravitz and Weizenbaum families combined their grocery businesses to form Giant Eagle and opened their first location in 1936. The chain grew throughout the Pittsburgh area during the 30s and 40s and increased its stores’ sizes in the 1950s. Giant Eagle became the city’s top supermarket chain by 1979 and expanded into neighbouring states through franchising and with acquisitions, such as the Ohio wholesale and retail chain, Tamarkin Cos., Inc. During the 2000s, the company introduced its GetGo gas stations and convenience stores, of which there are 190 locations today, many of which offer the company’s Cafe + Market food banner.
Today, Giant Eagle operates 175 corporate-owned and 54 independently-owned supermarkets, as well as 178 fuel and convenience stores, and sells 10,000 Giant Eagle branded products.
