Hormel is the family behind multinational manufacturer and marketer of consumer-branded food and meat products Hormel Foods Corporation. Based in Austin, Minnesota, Hormel Foods was founded by George A. Hormel in 1891.
After working in Chicago’s meatpacking industry, George Hormel settled in Minnesota, establishing Geo. A. Hormel & Company, and built the business’s first meatpacking facility. Through his ownership of Hormel, George eventually became one of the wealthiest individuals in the United States. He led the company until his son Jay C. Hormel was named president in 1928. Under Jay Hormel’s leadership, the company launched a number of popular products, such as Hormel Chili, Dinty Moore Beef Stew and SPAM. Along with his father, Jay Hormel established the Hormel Institute in the 1940s to study food nutrition. Jay Hormel died in 1954.
Jay Hormel’s son, Geordie Hormel, was a musician and recording studio proprietor who contributed music to 60s television shows, including The Fugitive, Lassie and The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin. Jay’s brother, James Hormel, was an educator who eventually became the United States Ambassador to Luxembourg in 1997. Today, the Hormel Foods Company has yearly sales of $9.6 billion.
