Based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, JBS is the world’s largest food processing operation. It was founded in 1953 by José Batista Sobrinho (JBS), a rancher who started a slaughtering business on his property. Sobrinho began to expand his operations in the 1960s with a series of slaughterhouse purchases within the region. By the 1980s, he had acquired other food processing operations throughout the entire nation of Brazil. In 2017, JBS earned more than US $51 billion in worldwide revenue and employed nearly 234,000 people. The corporation has three main divisions – JBS USA, Seara and JBS Foods International. JBS went public in 2007, the same year it acquired US food processor Swift & Company and rebranded it as JBS USA. Altogether, JBS has 150 food processing plants around the globe. These extend as far away as Australia, where they have 10 meat processing facilities, five feedlots and seven distribution centers. This makes JBS the largest multi-species processor, exporter and feed lotter in Australia. JBS continued to expand its global reach in 2015 with the $1.45 billion purchase of pork giant Cargill Inc. In 2017, JBS recorded an operating income of 298 million with total assets of $28.2 billion.
