A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S, more commonly known simply as the Maersk Group, is a Danish-based conglomerate with primary interests in the shipping and energy sectors. The organization has grown to become the world’s largest container-ship and supply-vessel operator, a title they’ve held since 1996. The Maersk Group’s 2016 operating income totaled just under $6.8 billion and they employ approximately 88,000 people with operations in 130 countries. The group was founded by Arnold Peter (AP) Møller and his father Peter Mærsk Møller as a shipping operation in 1904. To this day, shipping and related activities are the lifeblood of the Maersk Group. This activity includes worldwide container services, logistics and forwarding and terminal activities. By 2008, the shipping sector was responsible for more than half of the Group’s total revenue. Maersk Oil was launched in 1962 and for several decades, the Group was a significant player in the oil industry. Recently oil production reached more than 600,000 barrels per day and gas production reached 1 billion cubic feet per day. However, in 2017, The Maersk Group sold its stake in Maersk Oil to Total for a net gain of $2.6bn.
