Marquard & Bahls AG is a Hamburg-based parent company operating in energy and chemicals trading and logistics through its business divisions, which include Mabanaft, Petro Nord, Oil! and Bomin. Established in 1947 by Theodor Weisser, today, Marquard & Bahls has a presence in 36 countries.
In 1913, Franz von Marquard founded the lubrication oil company that would become a partnership when Otto Rudolf Julius Bahls joined the business in 1919. Theodor Weisser purchased the company in 1947 and began its expansion through acquisitions. The oil lubrication company Wilhelm Schliemann and storage facility MABAG were acquired in 1950. The company began operating internationally in 1951 with commercial trade in Africa. In 1961, Hans Weisser, eldest son of the founder, took over the company’s leadership role. Throughout the 70s and 80s, Marquard & Bahls grew its energy business through international oil tanking, storage and refining, in addition to petroleum stations and coal mines in the United States.
In 2000, Marquard & Bahls entered the natural gas market by purchasing a stake in Germany’s natGAS AG. The company continued the expansion of its aviation fuelling business throughout the 2000s, notably establishing Skytanking operations in the United States. Today, Daniel Weisser, grandson of the founder, serves as the family company’s supervisory board Chairman.
