The Mittal family is perhaps one of India’s most prominent industrialist families along with being one of the wealthiest families in the world. The primary source of their wealth springs from ownership of CEO of ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steelmaking company.
Lakshmi Niwas Mittal founded Mittal Steel in 1989. His father Mohan Lal Mittal founded and ran a steel business, Nippon Denro Ispat. Lakshmi learned the trade working alongside his father before deciding to go out on his own. His siblings, Pramod Mittal, Vinod Mittal and Seema Lohia, all stayed with their father’s company.
Lakshmi has a wife, Usha Mittal, and two children, Aditya and Vanisha Mittal. Both of Lakshmi’s children decided to join the family business in their adulthood. Aditya studied at the Jakarta International School before earning his bachelor’s degree in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1999, he was named head of Mergers and Acquisitions of Mittal Steel.
Vanisha graduated from the European Business School. She married Amit Bhatia in 2004 in a lavish wedding said to have cost $78 million. By the end of 2017, Forbes listed the Mittal family wealth at $17.2 billion.
