Pilot Flying J is North America’s largest line of truck stops/travel centers, serving more than 1.6 million customers per day. The company is headquartered out of Knoxville, Tennessee and offers locations in 44 states and six Canadian provinces. The chain was originally founded by James “Jimmy” Haslam in 1981. Today, the company sells more than 7 billion gallons of fuel annually at its more than 750 locations, which helps employ approximately 28,000 people continent-wide. In the fiscal year 2017, the Pilot Corporation earned an estimated $19.6 billion. Pilot’s first major acquisition came in 1993 when they purchased Marathon Petroleum Company and renamed their line of truck stops Pilot Travel Centers. In 2010, Pilot struck a deal to purchase Flying J’s travel centres, thus saving Flying J from bankruptcy. As part of the deal, the parent company would be renamed Pilot Flying J although each side would retain its brand identity on their stores. In 2016, Pilot Flying J ranked no. 14 on ForbesLargest Privately Held Companies. The Haslam family ownership, which has been intact since the company’s founding, is slated to come to an end in 2023. Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway announced in 2017 it was buying in for a 38.6 per cent stake initially and will expand to an 80 per cent ownership stake in 2023. At that time, Flying J will withdraw entirely.
