Founded in 1989, Rajesh Exports (REL) is a global leader in the gold industry. Based out of Bangalore, India, the company quickly became the first organised gold jewellery manufacturer in the country. What set the company apart from its competitors is that, in addition to becoming the largest exporter of gold products from India, REL simultaneously became the lowest cost producer. They are considered to be the largest processor of gold in the world, processing over 35 per cent of the world’s gold production. It is the only gold manufacturing company in the world that is involved in every step of processing, from refining to retailing.
In the short life of the company, they have expanded rapidly while maintaining considerable profit margins. In 2006, company sales reached US$1 billion for the first time. Four years later, the company soared to US$4 billion in sales. REL most recently reached a milestone of US$27 billion in sales while opening their 82nd jewellery store. Their purchase of Swiss refinery Valcambi, the largest refinery of precious metals in the world, cemented REL as a powerhouse in the gold industry. With that purchase, their facilities advanced significantly and built up their R&D department. REL currently has one of the world’s largest jewellery design databases, with 29,000 designs.
