Sheetz, Inc. is a US-based convenience store and coffee shop chain. Founded in 1952 by G. Robert “Bob” Sheetz, this family-owned company was established at the purchase of one of Bob’s father’s dairy stores in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
In 1961, Bob Sheetz brought his brother, Steve Sheetz, on board. He opened a second store in 1963, followed by another store six years later. The brothers planned to open a new store each year through 1972.
The company consists of a chain of coffee shops and convenience stores, most of which sell gasoline. The company is still headquartered in Altoona and operates stores in North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. By 1983, the company had opened 100 stores.
By the 2010s, the Sheetz company operated more than 500 locations and employed more than 17,000 individuals. The company does not conduct any franchises.
Bob Sheetz retired in 1981, at which time Steve Sheetz became president. The following managerial changeover came in 1995 when Bob’s son, Stan Sheetz, assumed the role of president and Steve moved to chairman of the board.
The fourth operative change came in 2013 when Stan Sheetz replaced Steve as chairman of the board and his cousin, Joseph S. Sheetz, became president and CEO.
