Sodexo SA is a food service and facilities management company from France with over 420,000 employees worldwide. Founded in 1966 by Pierre Bellon in Marseilles, he began by serving restaurants, schools and hospitals under the name Hotel Services Corporation. Now on the Fortune 500 list, several mergers have followed its initial expansion during the 1970s into Belgium, Africa and, finally, the Middle East. In 1998, Sodexo joined forces with Marriott Management Services – one of the largest food service companies in North America at the time – and listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2002, although they withdrew in 2007. At present, the company is listed on the Euronext Paris under the symbol SW and trades stock under the SDXOF and SDXAY. Sodexo serves multiple sectors including private corporations, government agencies, schools and universities, hospitals, aged care facilities, military bases and prisons. By 2016, subsidiary company Sodexo Justice Services operated in 122 prisons in eight countries and ran five prisons of their own in the UK. Headed by CEO Michel Landel as of 2018, their website calls them the “world leader in Quality of Life services,” with a commitment to remain as such while also maintaining their independence. Founder Pierre Bellon remains involved as Chairman Emeritus while his daughter acts as chairwoman of the company. According to statistics portal Statista, Sodexo’s operating income in 2018 was €997 billion ($1,120 billion).
