Hong Kong’s largest property developer, Sun Hung Kai also engages in hotel operation, car parking and transportation and infrastructure segments. The Hong Kong-based firm was founded in 1972 by Kwok Tak-seng.
The company began by building single-tower residential blocks to support new towns being set up by the Chinese government in the 1970s. Sun Hung Kai entered into the larger-scale, integrated developments business that they would be known for in the 1970s and early 1980s, such as the New Town Plaza in Sha Tin. Diversification into hotel operation continued throughout the 1980s, followed by premium residential and office space development in the early 1990s. The company expanded with large-scale developments in mainland China during the 2000s, such as the Shanghai Central Plaza. Sun Hung Kai completed the Two IFC in 2003, the tallest building in Hong Kong at the time.
The company has continued to grow into other business areas and services. Sun Hung Kai’s recently completed YOHO MALL is the largest shopping mall in the Northwest New Territories.
